Start With the Application
The intended use helps determine which glass requirements need to be considered. A tabletop, wall panel, partition piece or replacement glass panel may use different thickness, edge or safety specifications.
The project should not choose material only from dimensions.
Dimensions and Shape
Provide width and height, plus a sketch for nonrectangular pieces. Irregular shapes may need a physical template or field measurement after surrounding finishes are complete.
Edges, Holes and Notches
Exposed edges can require a finished edge specification. Holes for hardware, notches around fixtures and cutouts need exact positions and sizes.
Those features should be finalized before glass is produced because they cannot be treated like simple field cuts after installation.
Describe the Edge as Well as the Outline
Mark which edges are concealed by a frame and which remain exposed. Also show corners that people will pass or reach across. A shaped perimeter, a bevel and a finished straight edge are different requests; choose the intended appearance with the actual application in mind. Matching an existing piece may require photos of its edge profile as well as its outline.
For holes or cutouts, identify the hardware or fixture they must fit. Provide its drawing or model information when available, rather than estimating a hole from a photograph. Separate overall glass dimensions from the positions of those features, and label which side of the drawing faces the room.
What Determines Type and Thickness?
Describe whether the glass is enclosed in a frame, rests on furniture, spans between supports or forms part of a larger assembly. Include intended loading, indoor or outdoor exposure and any existing system specification. These details allow the appropriate material to be checked without assuming that a thicker-looking piece is automatically suitable.
Fabrication Boundary
Fabrication method and turnaround depend on the specific glass requirements. Start by confirming dimensions, edge work, holes or cutouts and installation needs.

Prepare a Drawing That Can Be Checked

Do not send only a diagonal measurement or a photograph without a scale.
