Deck stain or sealer can improve appearance and protect suitable wood surfaces, but coating does not repair rot or structural damage. The deck needs to be sound and properly prepared before finishing.
NY-GoodHome handles deck staining and finishing requests in Brooklyn and New York City. Call (223) 226-1828 with photos of the deck, existing coating and areas of wear.
Is the Deck Ready for Finish?
Loose boards, severe splintering, rot and structural movement should be addressed before coating. If repair is needed, use Deck & Patio Repair first.
The surface also needs to be clean and dry enough for the selected product.
Existing Coating and Preparation
Old stain, paint or sealer can affect how a new finish penetrates or bonds. Cleaning, scraping or sanding needs depend on the existing surface and product.
Power washing can be a preparation step on appropriate surfaces, but pressure should not be used as a substitute for material-specific prep.
Stain, Sealer or Opaque Finish
Different products change color and surface appearance in different ways. NY-GoodHome does not promise a specific product life or “waterproof deck” result through staining.
The selected product should be appropriate for the wood and existing finish.
