Replacing old gutters can sometimes reuse the same general route, while a new system may require planning downspout locations and drainage from the beginning.
The visible gutter is only one part of the water path. Where the downspout discharges also matters.
Fascia and Mounting Surface
The gutter needs a sound attachment surface. Rotten or damaged fascia should be repaired before a new gutter is expected to stay secure.
