Wainscoting changes a larger section of the wall than ordinary trim, so the layout, panel height and relationship to baseboards, outlets and door casing need to be planned before installation.
NY-GoodHome provides wainscoting installation and repair in Brooklyn and New York City. Call (223) 226-1828 with room photos, approximate wall lengths and the selected panel system if already chosen.
Choose the Wall-Panel Style and Height
Raised-panel, flat-panel, beadboard and board-and-batten styles create different spacing and trim details. The chosen height also affects outlets, switches, windows and furniture.
The room should be laid out as a whole instead of starting one panel and trying to make the final section absorb all remaining measurement differences.
Trim Transitions
Baseboard, cap rail, door casing and inside/outside corners all meet the panel system. Existing trim may stay, be modified or be replaced depending on the design.
If the main project is simply casing or molding rather than wall paneling, use Interior Trim or Crown Molding instead.
Repair Existing Wainscoting
Loose panels, damaged trim or local sections can sometimes be repaired without rebuilding the whole room. Profile matching and finish condition matter when new material meets existing work.
Wall damage should be corrected before a panel is used to cover the problem.
