An attic stair or hatch has to fit an opening in the ceiling, not just a product box. Opening dimensions, ceiling height, framing condition and the selected ladder system should be known before installation begins.
NY-GoodHome handles attic stair and hatch requests in Brooklyn and New York City. Call (223) 226-1828 with the ladder model, opening measurements and photos from above and below if safely available.
Existing Opening or New Opening?
Replacing a stair in an existing compatible opening is different from creating or enlarging an attic opening. New openings can affect framing and may require structural work beyond ordinary installation.
This page does not promise cutting structural members or redesigning roof/ceiling framing. If the opening is not already suitable, that condition should be identified first.
Ladder Type and Ceiling Height
Folding, telescoping and scissor-style attic stairs use different frame depths and operating clearances. Check the manufacturer’s rough-opening size and maximum ceiling height before the product is selected.
The swing or folding area below the hatch also needs to stay clear of walls, doors and fixtures.
Hatch Fit and Trim
A replacement unit may leave gaps or require finish trim around the opening. Significant ceiling damage belongs on Ceiling Repair & Finishing, while decorative casing belongs in the trim/carpentry category.
