Converting a bathtub into a shower changes more than the visible fixture. The project can affect the drain, plumbing, wall finish, waterproofing, shower base and enclosure, which makes sequence and existing conditions important.
NY-GoodHome accepts tub-to-shower conversion requests in Brooklyn and New York City for scope review. Call (223) 226-1828 with bathroom photos and the desired shower layout.
Existing Tub and Drain Location
Tub drains and shower drains may not use the same location or requirements. Moving or modifying drains is regulated plumbing work and should be identified before the new shower base is selected.
Demolition and Wall/Floor Repair
Removing the tub and surrounding finishes can expose wall or floor damage. The substrate needs to be repaired and suitable before waterproofing and tile or panels are installed.
Shower Pan, Waterproofing and Walls
A prefabricated base or tiled pan can be used depending on the design. Waterproofing needs to coordinate with the wall system rather than be treated as a finish-only detail.
Fixtures and Glass Enclosure
New shower controls or fixtures may require plumbing work. Custom frameless glass should be measured after tile and finished surfaces are complete.
Accessibility
A conversion is often part of a safer bathing plan. Grab bars, low-threshold layouts and other safety modifications should be discussed based on the user and space, without making blanket ADA or medical claims.
