Tempered Glass vs Low-Iron Glass
Tempering and low-iron composition are not competing options. One changes strength and breakage behavior; the other reduces the green tint of clear glass.
What tempering changes
Tempering is a heat-treatment process. It increases strength and changes how glass breaks. All holes, notches and edgework must be completed before tempering.
What low-iron changes
Low-iron glass contains less iron than standard clear glass, reducing the green color visible through the panel and at the edge.
A panel can be both
A backsplash, shower panel or partition can be fabricated from low-iron glass and then tempered when the application calls for both color clarity and safety treatment.
When low-iron matters most
The difference is especially visible with thicker glass, exposed edges, white tile, pale paint and back-painted light colors.
Why specification comes before fabrication
Glass type, thickness, safety treatment, holes and edgework should be approved together because they affect fabrication and appearance.
